Breath is life. It is the in-out/give-receive rhythm that pulses inside us, all day, every day, connecting us both internally and externally. In the ancient language of Hebrew, in fact, breath (neshima) is the same root word as soul (neshama). Truly, our breath is our essence. For this reason, by becoming mindful of and changing the patterns of our breath, we have the power to change how we feel, how we walk through the world, and how others perceive and interact with us. While conscious breathing is the most fundamental tool for mastering our destiny, however, many of us are oblivious to our breath. Worse yet, we allow external circumstances to control how we breathe – for example, contracting in response to stress, which both internalizes and exacerbates it.
